Outdoor events are all about great planning, dotting the I's and crossing the T's, and contingency plans. When you're at the mercy of Mother Nature you've got to plan for everything even creepy, crawly, biting critters.

Nothing kills the party buzz like having to constantly swat away flies, mosquitoes and no-see-ums. You want your guests to be talking about how many pictures they took, not how many bugs they killed. You can always suggest to guests that they spray themselves with bug spray beforehand, or recommend that they wear light colors, but generally you should try and do everything you can first, so your guests don't have to. Here we've come up with a few ideas on how to keep the bugs at bay.SHOO FLY!1. Set up a tent, like this 20 x 30 Party Tent, that will not only provide coverage from the elements, but also comes with mesh netting to keep mosquitoes and other flying pests away.2. Citronella is a long proven mosquito deterrent, and Citronella torches, like these Tiki torches, provide protection and supply a lovely ambiance for taking your event from daytime to nighttime.3. Planting naturally repellent plants can be practical and economically efficient, serving as a lovely eco-friendly decor. Some repellent plants include: Basil, Catnip, Lemongrass, Lavender, Mexican Marigold Mint and Peppermint. For a complete list click here.4. Another sweet smelling option is to provide guests with the opportunity to spritz themselves with sweet smelling perfumes and oils, unlike the harsh smell of normal bug repellents, like Aromaflage, botanical fragrance and insect repellent, and Avon's Skin-So-Soft, a bath oil with often little known bug repelling properties.5. If you very worried about mosquitoes and pests it might be best to hire professionals, like MOSQUITOSQUAD, to spray your event location 48-24 hours before the event. A DIY method would be to purchase an at home outdoor bug spray like this one from Scott's.Insects are always a pesky nuisance, but there are many ways you can go about controlling the nuisance that won't have you pulling your hair out.
